  • Date: January 14, 2012
  • What: Martin Luther King Service Day:  Trash and Debris Cleanup Work Party
  • Event Details: The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and REI  partnered with FoBP to pick up trash in the park, especially along the waterways. Volunteers also took part via Hands on Richmond and the Riverine Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists.   CBF, FoBP and Richmond City Parks (PRCF) donated bags, gloves and pick-ups.  REI brought water, water bottles and treated eveyone to lunch!  PRCF picked up trash and debris that was collected. FoBP thanks our partners and our volunteers for an extremely successful work party!
  • Results:  155 bags of trash/recylables, 8 tires, 2 bicycle tires, a 20 ft. roll of wire cable, a 18 ft. oil boom , 1 large slab of metal, a dryer door, several sleeping bags  and some other mysterious stuff were picked up along the Bryan Park floodplain.  Approximately 114 people volunteered for 285 hours.

A tree ready for planting near the historic Camp House

  • Date: November 12, 2011
  • What: McDonald’s Half Marathon Water Station
  • Event Details: FoBP Volunteers were on the front lines of this nationally-known sister event to the Suntrust Marathon. We cheered on the runners as we provided the much needed water and PowerAde each racer needed to complete the race.
  • Opportunity:  This was our third year of participating in this event.  Want to get involved?  Join us next year! Info will be posted on our website as the next 1/2 Marathon draws closer.
  • Date: November 8, 2011
  • Event Details: Volunteers from Altria, with the guidance of the James River Association, donated and planted 35 trees in Bryan Park.  They also cleared parts of the park of storm and trash debris.
  • Result: If you stand by the Camp House and look along the sledding hill, across to the soccer fields and south toward Shelter 3, you’ll see trees that wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for Altria’s contribution.  As they grown and mature they will replace the Park’s huge oaks and other trees which are nearing the end of their lifespans.  Altria’s volunteers’ donation of time and trees has ensured that Bryan Park will maintain its well-loved canopy of leaves for future generations.

  • Date: Saturday, October 22, 2011
  • Project: Watershed Cleanup — VoiCeS (Volunteers as Chesapeake Stewards, part of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation)  with FoBP and Richmond Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ support,  hauled bags and bags of trash from the pond perimeters and Jordan’s Branch, which drains a very large part of our metropolitan area. The trash flowing into the park is an on going problem.  Every tire, plastic container or bag, aluminum can, glass bottle and piece of Styrofoam that was collected will never endanger the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Results: 73 volunteers removed approximately 188 bags trash, a 55 gallon drum, a propane tank, a tent and 17 tires. The drum will be re-used as a rain barrel.

CBF Work Party Oct. 22, 2011-- just some of the collection!

  • Remember, anyone can pick up trash anytime. You are always welcome to our work parties, but you don’t have to wait till there is one! What a difference we all could make if each of us picked up a little litter every day, wherever we go!
  • Date: Saturday, September 10, 2011
  • Project: Work PartyVCU students made a huge contribution to the park! They re-graveled the Better Together Garden paths on the north side of the ponds.  They also helped to clear open areas and trails of trees which fell during Hurricane Irene.  We cannot thank them enough!
  • Date: September 4, 2011
  • Thanks goes to the Altius Cycling Community who had a cleanup party on September 4.  The group cleared trees felled by Hurricane Irene  from the Azalea Garden Loop using 10 chainsaws and 20 leaf blowers.
  • Date: August 13, 2011
  • Project: Anthem Moonlight Ride Water Station FoBP volunteers provided water, snacks and good cheers to those taking part in this yearly family event.
  • Date: Saturday, May 7, 2011
  • Project: For Virginian Master Naturalist Invasive Plant Removal Day, VMNs, FoBP and a Tree Steward worked together to clear a kiosk/picnic area that was overgrown by vines. Sitting along side the soccer field complex this area is now a welcoming place to relax or to read the new displays in the kiosk.  It is proof that just a few hours of hard labor can make a huge difference!

During the lunch break there will be a session on water quality and urban watersheds.
  • Lunch: Pizza and beverages will be supplied by Friends of Bryan Park.
  • What to Wear: Please dress for the weather.  Rubber boots or old shoes recommended.  We will provide light gloves and trash bags.

79 bags of trash were collected by VCU and Elk Hill School Students!

Please encourage your friends and family to dispose of  trash appropriately and to recycle where they can.  Set a good example for those around you by keeping trash out of our and all other watersheds!  Thanks!
